Besides upgrading the Airbus A321 narrowbody fleet and expanding Airbus A350/Boeing 787 widebody fleet, VNA is working to gradually replace the ATR fleet with small regional jet with about 100 seats. This replacement aims at improving the operational efficiency and service quality on short-haul routes that VNA is serving.

Compared to Airbus A321, regional jets have fewer seats, suitable for local routes and limited-access airports such as Dien Bien, Con Dao, Rach Gia, etc. With the flight range of between 2000 and 6,000 km, regional jets possess high mobility in operation.

Currently, VNA is researching the efficiency of regional jet including Embraer's E190-E2 and E175-E2 and Bombardier’s CRJ900/1000, Airbus Bombardier’s A220s (formerly CSeries CS100/300 from Bombardier), MRJ70/90 of Mitsubishi, and Sukhoi’s SSJ100.

According to VNA's fleet development plan during 2021-2025 period and vision til 2030, the company will run 20 small aircrafts in total. VNA may wet lease small aircraft for six months to test and evaluate actual performance before deciding to rent/purchase them as a replacement for ATR in the long term.

In order to study and evaluate the capacity of the jet, on October 18th, VNA participated in the demonstration of Brazil’s Embraer E190-E2 at Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi).

E190-E2 had a flight demonstration around Hanoi, departing at 11.30 am and landing at Noi Bai airport at 12.15pm on 18 October.
